Panthers vs 49ers. The Carolina Panthers first visited that city in1995, when they were originally in the NFC West before they moved to the more geographically-appropriate NFC South after the realignment in 2002. This Sunday, they will return to San Francisco to play a team that was once one of the franchise’s biggest rivals.
While we wait for the New Orleans Saints to host the Dallas Cowboys, we have a couple of afternoon games which may impact our playoff run this season. First, the Atlanta Falcons host the Seattle Seahawks, who have only lost one game this season, and are therefore the current top seed in the NFC. Saints fans may want to pretend the Seahawks are playing some other team today, if they can’t stomach pulling for the Falcons.
Afterwards, the Carolina Panthers will be playing in San Francisco. While the Panthers are only one win behind the Saints for the division lead right now, the 49ers are tied with New Orleans for second place in the NFC. So, particularly given the easier schedule the San Francisco 49ers face moving forward, every loss they take could help the Saints when determining home-field advantage in the playoffs.

Two of the NFL hottest teams will butt heads this weekend as the Carolina Panthers take on the San Francisco 49ers at Candlestick Park in California. Kickoff in Sunday’s showdown between the Panthers and Niners is set for 4:05pm ET; the game will be broadcast live on FOX. NFL Point Spreads from 5Dimes have San Francisco listed as a -6.5 against the spread home favorite and the Over/Under set at 42.5 points.
San Francisco had just about everyone that follows professional football scratching their heads after they dropped back to back games to the Seahawks and Colts. The Niners were, after all, supposed to be one of the league’s elite teams, which made their 1-2 start almost incomprehensible.
San Francisco has gone about restoring its reputation since then, though, and it has done a bang up job in doing so. The 49ers enter Sunday’s meeting with the Panthers off a bye, but they rattled off five straight wins before their break, defeating the Rams, Texans, Cardinals, Titans, and Jaguars by an average of 22.6 points per game.
